Does anyone know what science fiction movie this device was in?
Recording/playback device from the movie
I think the movie was made in the 60s. It started off when some scientists are in a radio telescope observatory, and the whole building is transported to a space station. They have to pass an IQ test, then they find out that they have to learn about the station's weapon capability in order to repel an invading fleet of spaceships. There are recording/playback devices that look like the attached picture (which I just cobbled together in Photoshop).
I saw this as a kid and I don't have a clue as to what it's called. Somebody please put me out of my suspense!
From SF Movie Explorers:
We've spent the past two days looking for a match to your description and, well, honestly, the best we've got is - This Island Earth (1955).
The alien computer in the movie, aka Interocitor, could be the device in the photo you sent us. Here is the picture.
We know it's a bit of a long shot, as the plot of the movie doesn't exactly match your description, but the bit you wrote about the IQ test the scientists in the movie are subjected to made us think of a similar scenario from This Island Earth where the characters are made to assemble Interocitor as a way of testing their intelligence.
Either way, we'll keep looking for your movie and if we come up with any matches we'll post them right away! :)
