The movie was directed by John Carpenter. Bill Lancaster wrote a screenplay based on John W. Campbell, Jr.'s novel Who Goes There?

Computer Voice: Your move: Bishop to knight four. My move: Knight to rook three.
R.J. MacReady: Poor baby, you're startin' to lose it, aren't ya?
Computer Voice: Your move: King to rook one. My move: Rook to knight six. Checkmate. Checkmate.
R.J. MacReady: You cheatin' bitch.

Nauls: Maybe we're at war with Norway?

Palmer: I was wonderin' when El Capitan was gonna get a chance to use his popgun.

Garry: You reach anybody, yet?
Windows: Reach anybody? We're a thousand miles from nowhere, man. And it's gonna get a hell of a lot worse before it gets any better!

Clark: I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is.

R.J. MacReady: I dunno, it's like this: thousands of years ago this spaceship crashes, and this thing, whatever it is, jumps out or crawls out and gets entombed in the ice.
Childs: I just cannot believe any of this voodoo bullshit.
Palmer: Childs, it happens all the time, man. They're falling out of the sky like flies. Government knows all about it, right, Mac?
Childs: You believe any of this voodoo bullshit, Blair?
Palmer: Childs, Childs... Chariots of the Gods, man. They practically own South America. I mean, they taught the Incas everything they know

Garry: So,come on now, MacReady. The Norwegians get a hold of this... and they dig it out of the ice...
R.J. MacReady: Yes, Garry. They dig it up, they cart it back, it gets thawed out, it wakes up, probably not the best of moods, and... I don't know, I wasn't there!

R.J. MacReady: I just wanna get up to my shack and get drunk...

Fuchs: I need to talk to you. Meet me outside in five minutes.
R.J. MacReady: It's 40 below zero outside.

Garry: My god, what was happening to him?
R.J. MacReady: If it had more time to finish it would have looked and sounded and acted just like Bennings!
Garry: I don't know what you're saying.
R.J. MacReady: That was one of those things out there, trying to imitate him, Garry. Come on.
Garry: MacReady, I know Bennings, I've known him for ten years. He's my friend.
R.J. MacReady: We've gotta burn the rest of him.

Dr. Blair: [Destroying the radio with a fire ax] You guys think I'm crazy? Well, that's fine! Most of you don't know what's going on around here, but I'm damn well sure some of you do! You think that thing wanted to be an animal? No dog's gonna make it a thousand miles through the cold. Don't you understand? That thing wanted to be us!

Dr. Blair: [smashing up the radio room with an axe] A Cell gets out, and it will IMITATE EVERYTHING on the face of the EARTH! AND NOTHING CAN STOP IT!
Childs: Hey, take it easy, come on, Blair, you don't want to hurt nobody.
Dr. Blair: [shoots at Childs but misses] I'LL KILL YOU!

R.J. MacReady: How you doin', old boy?
Dr. Blair: I don't know who to trust.
R.J. MacReady: [sighs] I know what you mean, Blair. Trust's a tough thing to come by these days. Tell you what - Why don't you just trust in the Lord?

R.J. MacReady: Somebody in this camp ain't what he appears to be. Right now that may be one or two of us. By spring, it could be all of us.
Childs: So, how do we know who's human? If I was an imitation, a perfect imitation, how would you know it was really me?

R.J. MacReady: I know I'm human. And if you were all these things, then you'd just attack me right now, so some of you are still human. This thing doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It'll fight if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won.

R.J. MacReady: [talking into tape recorder] Nobody... nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired... there's nothing more I can do, just wait... RJ MacReady, helicopter pilot, US outpost #31. [turns off recorder]

Dr. Blair: [Calmly eating beans in the tool shed] I don't want to stay out here anymore. I want to come back inside.

Childs: Just let him freeze to death outside.
Windows: Childs, what if we're wrong?
Childs: Why, then we're wrong!

Childs: You're gonna have to sleep sometime, MacReady.
R.J. MacReady: I'm a real light sleeper, Childs.

Palmer: [Norris' head sprouts legs and tries to walk away] You've gotta be fucking kidding!

R.J. MacReady: Watching Norris in there gave me the idea that maybe every part of you bastards is a whole. Every piece of you is self-sufficient, an animal unto itself. When a man bleeds, it's just tissue. But blood from one of you Things won't obey. It's a newly formed individual with a built-in desire to protect its own life. When attacked, your blood will try and survive - and crawl away from a hot needle, say.

R.J. MacReady: Now I'm gonna show you what I already know.

Garry: This is pure nonsense. It doesn't prove a thing.
R.J. MacReady: I thought you'd feel that way, Garry. You were the only one who could've gotten to that blood. We'll do you last.

Garry: [after passing the blood test] I know you gentlemen have been through a lot. But when you find the time... I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter tied to this fucking couch!

R.J. MacReady: Childs, we're going out to give Blair the test. If he tries to make it back here and we're not with him... burn him.

R.J. MacReady: Blair's been busy out here all by himself.
Nauls: What is it?
R.J. MacReady: Something he's been making. It's a ship of some kind.

Garry: The generator's gone.
R.J. MacReady: Any way we can we fix it?
Garry: It's gone, MacReady.

[The thing roars and screams]
R.J. MacReady: Yeah, fuck you too!

Childs: The explosions set the temperatures up all over the camp. But it won't last long though.
R.J. MacReady: When these fires go out, neither will we.
Childs: How will we make it?
R.J. MacReady: Maybe we shouldn't.
Childs: If you're worried about me...
R.J. MacReady: If we've got any surprises for each other, I don't think either one of us is in much shape to do anything about it.
Childs: Well... what do we do?
R.J. MacReady: [slumping back] Why don't we just wait here a little while? See what happens.
